Significance of Peanut Allergy
The prevalence of peanut allergy (PA) in Africa is unknown but anecdotal reports suggest the prevalence to be lower than that experienced in developed countries, which report a prevalence of approximately 1.5%. Countries in Africa and Asia, as well as Israel, where the early consumption of high-dose peanut protein is routinely practised, have enjoyed a low prevalence of peanut allergy, e.g. 0.0...
متن کاملPeanut Allergy: An Overview
: Peanut allergies have been increasing in prevalence in most industrialized countries. Onset is typically in early childhood, with a trend towards earlier ages of presentation. The allergy is lifelong in most affected children, although 15-22% will outgrow their peanut allergy, usually before their teenage years. Manifestations of peanut allergy range from mild to severe, and risk factors pred...
متن کاملImmunotherapy for peanut allergy.
Peanut allergy is one of the commonest food hypersensitivities causing fatal or near-fatal reactions. There is, currently, no preventive treatment and the incidence of severe allergic reactions during peanut desensitisation has limited its clinical use. Anti-immunoglobulin E therapy has been shown to be effective in preventing peanut-induced reactions but it does not result in long-term toleran...
متن کاملThe management of peanut allergy.
Peanut allergy is common and can be a cause of severe, life-threatening reactions. It is rarely outgrown like other food allergies such as egg and milk. Measures aiming to reduce its prevalence via maternal avoidance during pregnancy and lactation, or delayed introduction into the diet, have failed to show any benefit. Peanut allergy has a significant effect on the quality of life of sufferers ...
متن کاملDeveloping Therapies for Peanut Allergy
Peanut allergy is an IgE-mediated, persisting immune disorder that is of major concern worldwide. Currently, no routine immunotherapy is available to treat this often severe and sometimes fatal food allergy. Traditional subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy with crude peanut extracts has proven not feasible due to the high risk of severe systemic side effects. The allergen-specific approaches und...
